Black Desert: How to obtain sailing experience.
How to level up sailing?
Here is what you need to do:
· Own a boat. (A raft will not work)
· Have lots of repair kits
· You only gain sailing experience in un-mapped (unchartered) water. (Margoria Ocean)
· You cannot auto-path in this area.
· You cannot “AFK” sail in this area. (At least it’s not recommended)
· You will run into ghost ships and water sprouts that can damage your boat.
· There are several daily quests in Port Ratt that help you gain sailing experience.
· You can kill / hunt sea monsters. (Young Black Rust, Young Candidum, Young Nineshark) This will give you some sailing experience too.
Leveling up in sailing is one of the more difficult life skills to get experience for. BDO has reduced the experience you need for sailing to level up but really, not made it any easier to gather that experience. You will have to decide if sailing that much is worth it to you.
Here is a random picture of my Shai character for no reason at all.
Black Desert: How I level up additional characters quickly.
How I level up additional characters:
I do the following before I start a new character because if everything is in place; I can level up a character to 56 in less than a day.
Preparation:
Armor: I place an extra set of armor in storage at either Veila or Heidel. This is Helmet, Armor, Gloves and Shoes. The extra set is just for leveling up different characters. My main set of armor will always be on my main combat character. The extra set is leveled up to at least PRI. Some parts are higher but I don’t worry about leveling it up anymore. All the armor and weapons have crystals in the sockets. I like the Grunil set because you have two places in each item to place crystals and since these are just additional characters, they do not need fancy armor.
Weapon: I buy two weapons (Main & Sub) and also place it in storage in Veila. These weapons will be either 15+ or Pri. Sometimes, I will buy a 15+ because it’s so much cheaper and just level it up to PRI. (It’s not super hard to level up a 15+ to pri)
Horse: I will have a decent horse ready in the Veila stable. I will also gear up the horse too.
Food: I will put meals & potions with extra combat buffs and carrots into storage.
Tools: I will put one of each tool in storage. Example: Axe, Hoe, Butcher & Tanning Knife. (Usually the ones with 100 to 130 uses)
Buff: Sometimes, I will put a combat book or several combat certificates in storage depending what I have at the time.
Jewelry: I put 2 rings, 2 earrings, necklace and a belt in storage. I use the Asula set.
Start:
I create the character and start out in Olvia. I follow the Black Spirit quests all the way to Veila and before killing the first boss; I will get my horse and everything out of storage. Put on your armor, weapons and jewelry and get rid of your noobie stuff. Have the tools on hand for any random quest that you might need it for. I then proceed to the 1st boss quest and kill him in about 3 seconds. During this process, I will get out my pets and have them pick up loot even though the loot is not worth much. I will pretty much complete all the Black Spirit quests up to Calpheon. My goal is to get as many inventory slots as I can. By the time, I’m at Calpheon; I am ready to kill the Catfisherman boss which will level me up to 50. I save all the buffs for this point since you will level up extremely fast to 50 without anything. I am constantly eating meals whether I’m fighting or not because this will bump up your health.
After level 50:
I’m still going to follow the Black Spirit Quests until I get to awakening level 56 but I am also going to do a lot of mob killing. (Rhutums, Marsha & Catfisherman) Mob killing will help you level up pretty fast to 56. Be sure to use your points on combat skills thru out. Don’t stop to kill ogres or cyclops. You will be just slowing yourself down.
The way to think about it is and this is only an example. (Not factual numbers)
If one Rhutum is worth 2 points and you can kill 6 Rhutums in 3 seconds. You would get 240 points of experience in 1 minute.
If one ogre is worth 20 points and you kill 1 ogre per minute, you would get 20 points per minute.
Even if you killed 2 ogres in 1 minute, Rhutums would still be the better deal. More bang for your buck.
BDO has also placed combat experience as a reward in most of the quests so leveling up is much faster than before. In some cases, you can get more combat experience from the quests than an hour killing mobs. In my opinion, quests are really worth doing even past level 56.
BDO: Quest Tip – Count the arrows
I am trying to level up another character to 60 so I’m doing a lot of quests lately. There is one over by Outpost Supply Port that is particularly annoying and difficult. The quest is called “Count the arrows.” You will need to count all the arrows in several boxes. It is completely random and not to mention almost impossible to count all the arrows but apparently somebody on the internet has done it. (Not me though) I searched google to find the answer – so here is what you need to do if you have this quest.
Open chat window: Type in 922.
Hit enter. Quest is completed.
BDO: What I wish I knew in the beginning.
Black Desert Online: Tips & What I wish I knew at the beginning:
This game is so vast and there is so much to do. It really is impossible to do everything.
I have been playing for 2 years and have not even done a 1/3 of it yet.
Don’t get overwhelmed by it all and take it slow.
Trying to do everything at once will only achieve burn out.
Get a pet.
If you purchase anything from the Pearl shop, then a pet is a must.
Occasionally, you can get a free pet from the Daily attendance but it is not every month.
You have little hope of ever purchasing a pet off the marketplace.
You can have up to 5 pets out at one time.
Pets pick up your loot and give you bonuses for combat and life skills. (Loot = Money/Silver)
Pearl Shop is a rip off.
Everything is way over price.
Pearl shop does have sales and coupons every once in a while.
Try out different characters first to see which ones you like the best before buying character items in the pearl shop.
If you ever have to delete a character, some of those pearl items will not transfer to other characters.
Fishing
Fishing is the best way for a beginner to earn lots of silver.
You can AKF fish and still earn silver.
PVP
PVP begins at level 50.
You don’t have to PVP.
Other players can kill you in combat areas even if you do not have PVP activated. (Only after level 50)
You can lose experience when you die.
Some of the crystals might break in your weapons and armor if you die.
Awakening
Awakening begins at level 56
You cannot add crystals to your awakening weapon.
Horse
Buy a horse as soon as possible. Does not need to be expensive or high tier.
It will be too difficult and time consuming to run everywhere.
Quests
Do the Black Spirit quests.
Those quests will reward you with inventory slots and combat experience.
Black Spirit quests need to be done in order to unlock other quests.
Do not sell!
Black Stones
Memory Fragments
You will need a shit ton of these to level up weapons and armor.
I do not recommend selling items from rewards or events until you are sure what they are.
Rewards
You are rewarded the longer you stay on the server even if you are AFK.
You are rewarded for having multiple characters.
These are actually encouraged in this game.
Characters
It is best to have one main fighting character and make the additional characters geared towards life skills.
Reason is because leveling up weapon and armor is very expensive and a long drawn out process.
Characters part two
Not all characters are created equal.
I do not recommend making the “Ranger” character your first one.
The “Ranger” is difficult to level up and cannot combat mobs like the other characters.
The ranger is a good character but it is not a killing machine.
Good beginning characters: Striker, Dark Knight, and Tamer. (Only my opinion)
Characters part three
Your character name can be important. Depending on what you name your character will be the deciding factor whether you get killed a lot or not.
I named one of my character after a venereal disease and people are constantly trying to kill me.
There has been a few guilds that have refused to let me join over the character’s name.
Changing a character or family name will cost you actual money from the Pearl Shop.
So choose wisely! Unless, you like being verbally abused, trolled and even killed.
Pay to Win
BDO has a lot of high priced crap in their pearl shop but the game is not pay to win.
BDO is one huge sandbox and there is no winning scenario.
You can buy stuff that will give you extra boosts but you can also obtain that without spending real money.
High powered weapons, armor and other things, you will have to actually work for it.
Beginner Weapons & Armor
You will get beginner weapons and armor from starter quests.
Do not level these up. It is a waste of black stones.
You cannot re-sell these on the marketplace.
Olvia servers (It is Olvia not Olivia)
You can only play on the Olvia servers if you are new and for up to 30 days.
Join those servers for the max allowed time.
Olvia servers give you extra experience that will help you level up.
Server Switching
You can switch servers every 15 minutes.
This is handy if you somebody is bothering you or you are in an overcrowded location.
Guilds
It’s not necessary to join a guild to play the game.
If you do join a guild – there are PVP and PVE guilds.
Joining a guild does provide you with extra perks and boosts.
Crystals
Grind unused cheap crystals and turn them into black stone powder.
You will need lots of this powder for various projects / crafting.
Chat
Some of the server chat is cancer.
You can turn off certain chats and even make the window smaller so that it is less distracting.
You can mute people in chat.
Notifications
There are a lot of notifications in BDO that automatically show up on default.
It’s annoying and distracting. You can turn off the majority of them in your settings.
Family Funds
BDO gives you daily funds.
The amount of funds depend on all your characters combined combat, knowledge and life skill levels.
I have 6 characters between the levels of 56 and 59. I get over million of silver per day.
Repair
If you need to repair your weapons or armor and there is not a blacksmith around, look for a stable.
Stable personnel will also make repairs.
Life skills
Easy life skills for beginners: Fishing, Cooking, Alchemy, Farming, Gathering, Processing and Trading.
More difficult life skills: Horse Training, Sailing and Hunting.
AFK life skills: Fishing, Cooking, Alchemy, Processing and Horse Training.
Knowledge
Pressing “H” brings up your knowledge screen.
The more knowledge you obtain thru quests or other means will equal more energy for your character /family.
Contribution Points:
You need contribution points for a house, extra storage, worker crafting stations and unlocking nodes.
Black Desert: Pro Tip (To ease the pain of leveling to 60)
Recently, I have leveled up one of my characters to the 59 and it’s been quite painful trying to get her to 60. I have been fighting monster after monster, mob after mob, until my tiny gamer fingers went numb. So I grew weary of fighting. I sat depressed on the side of the road watching other happy gamers go by. I started to do a few quests to fill the void and to my surprise BDO has added massive amounts of combat experience to all these quests. I spent two hours today doing all these random quests. I started out at 35%. See pictures below.
About an hour later, as you can see in this screenshot, I’m at 58.219 %
Another hour after that, I’m at 78.300%
Normally, this would have taken me weeks of fighting mobs to level up to this percent and I’m assuming BDO is adding combat experience in these quests to encourage people to do them. It is working, BDO! I definitely want to do some random quests! Never before had I had this much enjoyment from talking to NPC and basically, being their gimp for two hours. I have no idea how long BDO will keep the combat experience in these quests but if you need to level up a little quicker, I really suggest doing a few.
PRO TIP: DO THE QUESTS!
Update (07/08/19)
I did reach level 60 the same day as the post above. I found that certain areas did have quests with better combat experience as rewards. This tended to be new areas like: Grana,Stars End, Brelin Farms, Duvencrune & surrounding areas. If I went to Heidel or Veila, the quests did have combat experience but did not have as much as the new areas. From each quest, I was gaining 2 to 3 % experience. I also killed about 600 blue man dogs (Fabus) to compare if combat would give me more experience but it did not. I think after killing all the dirty dogs, I went up less than 1 %. So the quests are quicker and more experience.
I also found that quests with the book beside them offered better combat experience. There were a lot of repeat quests that did not have the combat experience but there were quite a few that did. I skipped the ones that had no experience as a reward. I’m not sure about the Black Spirit quests because I had completed the majority of those already.
